HMRC stands for Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs. It is a non-ministerial government department established in 1909 charged with the responsibility of collecting value-added tax (VAT), customs duties, excise duties and indirect taxes including Air Passenger Duty, Insurance Premium Tax, Climate change Levy, Landfill Tax and other relevant government revenues in the UK.

HMRC as a tax collection office works with two other agencies to provide smoother and hassle free tax collection services and make it easy for the honest majority to get their tax right and make cheating difficult for dishonest people from avoiding their civic responsibility.

I live in Australia, I am told I have to complete an on line self assessment. the id numbers and Access codes are not being accepted on the online form. I have spent several hours trying to do this with no success. I am told that the system is unable to verify me because I live overseas. I am further told that the new id numbers will be posted to me which will take several days. I am also told that if I do not complete my return by 31 January 2018. I will be penalised. I have telephoned but have been left hanging on the phone for long periods of time. Clearly this form will not be completed on line. I am, as I write, yet again trying to get through by telephone. I would appreciate a reply ASAP. I wish to avoid any cost implications. Thank you
I and my wife have returned to live in England from the Isle of Man. I have attempted to register for self assessment but the computer fails to accept my name/national insurance number and I cannot complete the registration process. I have tried telephoning without success. Could you please advise as to how to proceed with this matter. Thank you in anticipation of your help.
